BEIJING, April 6 (Xinhua) -- The number of traffic accidents across China saw a 21.3-percent drop year on year during the three-day Tomb-sweeping Day holiday, the Ministry of Public Security said Monday.
As of 6 p.m. Monday, the death toll from the accidents was down 19.4 percent from the same period last year, read a statement from the ministry, adding that no major road traffic accidents or large-scale traffic jams were reported.
Police caught more than 3,300 drivers driving under the influence of alcohol and more than 19,000 drivers violating traffic rules during the holiday, said the statement.
The Tomb-sweeping Day, also known as the Qingming Festival, is an important occasion for the Chinese to visit cemeteries, pay tribute to the dead and worship their ancestors.
This year, many "tomb sweeping" activities were done virtually on the internet due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
