Brunei to conduct random COVID-19 testing for foreign workers

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Brunei will conduct COVID-19 laboratory tests randomly among migrant workers in the country, the Brunei government announced on Monday.

According to Brunei's Ministry of Health, the latest COVID-19 case statistics show that 25 out of 135 cases detected in the country were foreigners, which includes some of the foreign workers working in the sultanate.

"Therefore, the Ministry of Health will enhance the monitoring of the spread of COVID-19 in the country, especially among migrant workers in which the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs will conduct laboratory tests at random among migrant workers working in this country."

Selected employers will be contacted to bring the workers to undergo the laboratory COVID-19 tests for free, the health ministry added.

Brunei reported no new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, the second consecutive day without new cases since the first case was detected in the sultanate on March 9.

According to Brunei's Ministry of Health, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Brunei remained at 135. Nine more patients have recovered, bringing the total recovered cases to 82.

Brunei's Ministry of Home Affairs announced on Monday that the Ramadhan Bazaars typically held in different locations across the country during Muslim's holy month, which is coming soon, will not be held this year, as part of the measures to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Brunei's Ministry of Religious Affairs also announced on Monday that the closure of all mosques, suraus and prayer halls has been extended for another week until April 13.
