BERLIN, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Domestic air traffic as well as that with regions initially most affected by the coronavirus "declined significantly," the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) announced on Tuesday.

According to Destatis, the number of departing passengers on domestic flights in February fell by 15.1 percent to 1.5 million compared to last year.

Fraport, the operator of Germany's largest airport in Frankfurt, announced Tuesday that passenger numbers last week plummeted by 95.2 percent compared with the same period last year.

Freight and airmail at Frankfurt airport also declined and fell by 25 percent to 32,904 tons.

Last week, the German Air Traffic Control (DFS) already reported that traffic in German airspace had "drastically" collapsed in the first quarter. On March 31, the number of registered flights in German airspace was almost 85 percent below last year's level.

"There has never been such a slump in the history of DFS," said DFS CEO Klaus-Dieter Scheurle.
