BEIRUT, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese President Michel Aoun on Wednesday urged to strengthen the country's security measures amid a remarkable surge in thefts incidents, said a statement of the presidency.

"Security agencies are doing a great job with the tasks assigned to them but we need to maintain strong cooperation among military and security services in the coming period," Aoun said during a security meeting in Lebanon.

At the meeting, security agencies gave an overview about the security situation in the country and the needs for security agencies in the coming period to increase their efforts in maintaining high security standards.

Lebanon has witnessed in the past month a series of theft incidents targeting houses and pharmacies amid increasing rates of unemployment and poverty in the country.

Lebanon's Minister of Social Affairs Ramzi Moucharafieh launched on Wednesday a social program aimed at giving support in the form of food boxes to the most vulnerable population.
