BUENOS AIRES, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Former Argentina international midfielder Lucho Gonzalez believes his ex-Albiceleste teammate, Gabriel Heinze, has what it takes to manage at international level.

After an impressive start to his coaching career with Godoy Cruz in 2015, Heinze oversaw Argentinos Juniors' promotion to Argentina's top division in 2017.

He then transformed a struggling Velez Sarsfield into a contender for the Argentinian Superliga title, earning the team a place in next year's Copa Libertadores.

"It makes me happy to see the success he's having as a coach," Gonzalez told the TyC Sports channel on Tuesday.

"He has all of the tools needed to be in charge of Argentina's national team because of his international experience and what he's demonstrated as a coach. I'm sure there is not a player who has had him as a coach who would speak badly of him."

Gonzalez, 39, currently plays with Brazilian Serie A side Athletico Paranaense. Both he and Heinze were members of Argentina's World Cup squads in 2006 and 2010.

Heinze stepped down as Velez manager in March, having led the club to third place in the Argentinian Superliga's final 2019-20 standings. The former Real Madrid and Manchester United defender gave no reasons for his decision.
