BANGKOK, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Thailand's National Vaccines Institute (NVI) said on Monday that it is now testing a candidate COVID-19 vaccine in animals, after conducting initial laboratory based tests.

In collaboration with Medical Science and Science faculties of Mahidol University and the Faculty of Pharmacy of Chulalongkorn University, the institute's director Dr. Nakorn Premsri, told the media that if the tests on animals show convincing results by stimulating the creation of antibodies, it will then be tested on human beings in three phases.

The first phase will involve testing on 30 to 50 subjects to verify the safety of the vaccine.

The second phase will involve testing 100 to 150 subjects, to verify whether the vaccine will stimulate the production of antibodies.

The third phase, which will be tested on over 500 subjects, is to determine the efficacy of vaccine.

Meanwhile, the Medical Science Department from Chulalongkorn University said that two tests had been conducted on animals, in a laboratory of Chulalongkorn University.

An assessment is underway to determine the level of antibody production. Enditem
