UNITED NATIONS, April 27 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations is concerned over the impact of COVID-19 on people across Syria, many of them displaced and particularly vulnerable, a UN spokesman said on Monday.

The Syrian government has confirmed 43 COVID-19 cases, including three deaths, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The most recent case was confirmed on Sunday.

"The United Nations continues to step up its efforts to mitigate the virus' spread, with a focus on enhancing the capacity to detect, diagnose and prevent the spread of COVID-19 to the extent possible, ensure adequate surveillance of entry points, and provide protective equipment and training of health workers," Dujarric said.

The World Health Organization is leading UN efforts to support preparation and mitigation measures across Syria, including in the volatile northwest and northeast, he said. Enditem
