MADRID, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Breeders at one of the largest zoos in Spain have been following a strict routine to take care of the animals as the country remains in lockdown amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although there are no visitors in Zoo Aquarium de Madrid, breeders and vets remain at work inside.

"The animals are still here, so they need the same daily care as always. They need to be well-fed, to have clean fresh water and areas," Chief Veterinary Officer Eva Martinez told Xinhua.

"We work in shifts to separate the teams, always wear masks and maintain a safe distance amongst ourselves and animals," she said.

She added that great apes, such as orangutans, need special attention given their possibility of attracting the novel coronavirus. Enditem
