CAIRO, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Ten Egyptian soldiers were hit by the explosion of an improvised explosive device on Thursday that targeted their armored vehicle in North Sinai province northeastern Egypt, the Egyptian military spokesman said in a statement.

Egyptian army spokesman Tamer al-Refai did not specify how many of the ten military men were killed or wounded, but he pointed out that they included two officers and eight soldiers.

"The armed forces stress the continuation of their combat operations against terrorist elements to maintain the security and stability of the nation," Refai said in the brief statement.

Egypt has been fighting a wave of terrorist activities that killed hundreds of policemen, soldiers and civilians since the ouster of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 and the later security crackdown on his Muslim Brotherhood group.

Most terrorist attacks in Egypt over the past few years were claimed by a Sinai-based group loyal to the Islamic State regional group.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian security forces killed hundreds of terrorists and arrested thousands of suspects during the country's anti-terror war declared following Morsi's ouster. Enditem
