Roundup: Turkey's COVID-19 cases surpass 122,000 as more Mideast countries record hundreds of new cases

CAIRO, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Turkey on Friday confirmed 2,188 new COVID-19 cases as its tally soared to over 122,000. Meanwhile, more countries in the Middle East reported hundreds of new cases.

Turkey, the hardest-hit country in the Middle East, recorded 122,392 COVID-19 cases and the death toll hit 3,258 after 84 more deaths were added.

Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said that 53,808 patients in the country have recovered from the virus.

Iran, now the second hardest hit country in the Middle East, reported a total number of 95,646 confirmed cases after 1,006 new infections were added.

The deaths from the virus in Iran hit 6,091, up by 63 from a day ago. A total of 76,318 coronavirus patients have recovered, with 2,899 still in critical condition.

Saudi Arabia, another hard-hit country in the region, witnessed an increase of 1,344 coronavirus cases and seven new deaths, raising the tally of infections to 24,097, with 169 fatalities and 3,555 recoveries.

Meanwhile, Israel reported 155 new confirmed cases, bringing the tally of coronavirus infections to 16,101.

The death toll from the virus in Israel increased from 222 to 225 while the recoveries rose by 595 to 9,156.

In Qatar, 687 new cases were detected on Friday, binging the number of confirmed cases to 14,096, of whom 12 have died and 1,436 recovered.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced 557 new COVID-19 cases and six more deaths, raising the total confirmed cases to 13,038 and the death toll to 111.

A total of 114 more patients have made full recovery from the virus, taking the tally of the UAE's recoveries to 2,543.

In Egypt, 358 new cases and 14 new deaths from COVID-19 were confirmed, raising the total cases to 5,895 and the death toll to 406.

The Egyptian Health Ministry also reported 79 cases of recovered cases, increasing the total number of recoveries to 1,460.

Morocco's confirmed COVID-19 cases increased by 146 to 4,569, which included 170 fatalities and 1,083 recoveries.

Kuwait, where a Chinese medical team arrived few days ago to help combat the coronavirus outbreak, reported on Friday 353 new cases, bringing the country's total number to 4,377, of whom 30 have died and 1,602 recovered.

The Chinese experts expressed confidence that Kuwait will be able to overcome the disease.

"We believe that Kuwait will achieve very good results in fighting against coronavirus," said Ruan Yuesheng, head of the Chinese expert team which is sharing China's anti-epidemic experiences with the Kuwaiti side.

A day earlier, Tunisian Prime Minister Elyes Fakhfakh expressed his country's gratitude to China for its support in Tunisia's fight against the novel coronavirus as the country's confirmed cases has reached 994, including 41 deaths.

The prime minister said China has controlled the pandemic in a short period of time, which is admirable.

Algeria registered on Friday 148 new infections and three deaths from the virus.

The death toll of COVID-19 in the country hit 453, and the total infections rose to 4,154 as 1,821 patients have recovered.

In Bahrain, 130 new cases of coronavirus were reported on Friday, raising the tally of infections in the country to 3,170 with eight deaths and 1,555 recoveries.

Oman's Ministry of Health announced 99 new cases of infections, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country to 2,447, including 11 deaths and 495 recoveries.

On the same day, Iraq confirmed 68 new coronavirus cases, raising the total number of infections to 2,153, of whom 94 have died and 1,414 recovered.

In Lebanon, the number of COVID-19 infections increased by four to 729, while the death toll remained at 24.

A total of 10 new cases of the novel coronavirus were confirmed in Palestinian territories on Friday, bringing the total number to 517 including four deaths and 102 recoveries.

In the mean time, Libya announced two new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total cases in the country to 63, with 18 recoveries and three deaths.

Yemen reported one new case on Friday, raising the number of confirmed cases to seven with two deaths. Enditem
