Afghanistan reports 179 new COVID-19 cases, tally at 2,469

KABUL, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan on Saturday reported 179 new COVID-19 cases, the second biggest daily increase so far, the Ministry of Public Health confirmed.

"A total of 179 new COVID-19 cases were reported across Afghanistan within the past 24 hours. The number of people infected to the virus stands at 2,469 as of Saturday morning, including 19 patients who remain in severe condition," the ministry said in a statement.

Four COVID patients died during the period, bringing the death toll to 72 across the country, the statement added.

On Thursday, the country reported 232 coronavirus cases, the highest daily increase since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country in mid-February.

Twenty-one COVID patients were discharged from hospitals during the past 24 hours, bringing the number of recoveries to 331, the statement said, adding the ministry has conducted more than 11,000 COVID-19 tests so far. Enditem
