166 new COVID-19 cases confirmed in Morocco, 5,219 in total

RABAT, May 5 (Xinhua) -- A total of 166 new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Morocco on Tuesday, bringing the total number to 5,219, announced Director of Epidemiology at the Ministry of Health Mohamed El Youbi in his daily briefing.

The number of people declared cured increased to 1,838 with 185 new recoveries, while some 72 patients are being treated in intensive care units.

El Youbi said 181 deaths from COVID-19 were reported so far, after the announcement of two cases of death in the past 24 hours.

He also underlined the stability of the fatality rate, which stands at 3.5 percent, adding that the recovery rate is at 35.2 percent, thus continuing its rise.

Casablanca has remained the worst-hit region in the country with 1,362 cases, followed by Marrakech-Safi with 1,091.

On April 18, Morocco extended the state of medical emergency until May 20 in a strengthened effort to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus.

A nationwide one-month night curfew was launched on April 25. Enditem
