CAIRO, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Egypt's daily COVID-19 infections set a new record of 388 cases on Tuesday, raising the total cases registered in the country to 7,201.
Meanwhile, 16 patients died of the novel coronavirus on Tuesday, bringing the death toll to 452, said Egyptian Health Ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed in a statement.
Egypt announced its first confirmed case of COVID-19 on Feb. 14 and the first death on March 8, both of whom were foreigners.
The country's daily recoveries also witnessed a new record as 98 coronavirus patients, including a foreigner, were completely cured and discharged from quarantine hospitals on Tuesday, bringing total recoveries to 1,730.
Megahed stressed that all COVID-19 patients in Egypt receive necessary medical care in accordance with the guidelines of the World Health Organization.
The Egyptian government has recently started to ease restrictions and reopen services and offices that have been closed since mid-March, within a coexistence plan to carry out precautionary measures while resuming services and economic activities.
The North African country is currently implementing a nationwide nine-hour nighttime curfew during the ongoing Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Enditem
