DAMASCUS, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Turkish border guards targeted a Russian military observation point in the northern Syrian province of Aleppo on Wednesday, killing a Kurdish guard, a war monitor reported.

The Turkish soldiers fired on the Russian observation point to the west of the city of Ayn al-Arab, or Kobane, in the northern countryside of Aleppo, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Britain-based watchdog said the killed guard was a Syrian Kurdish fighter with the Syrian Democratic Forces.

The incident is the first of its kind, the Observatory noted.

Russia and Turkey have reached several agreements about the situation in northern Syria, the latest of which was a cease-fire deal between the Syrian army and the rebels in Idlib Province which went into effect in March.

It's still unclear what triggered the shooting from the Turkish side. Enditem
