PHNOM PENH, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Three young children were drowned in a sand-dredging pit on the southern outskirts of Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia, according to a national police's report on Saturday.

The accident occurred in the late afternoon of Friday in Meanchey district when they got into the water to take a bath without an adult's presence.

The victims were identified as a 5-year-old girl and her 4-year-old brother as well as a 3-year-old girl, the police said.

According to the police, the victims' parents are construction workers.

"After examining their bodies, the police concluded that they died of drowning," the police reported on its website.

Drownings happen often in Cambodia, especially in rural areas. On Feb. 4, three children, aged six, eight and 10 years old, also drowned in a pond in northwest Preah Vihear province's Choam Ksan district. Enditem
