LUSAKA, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Zambia has reported 85 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on Saturday, bringing the total number of infections to 252, health authorities said.

Three new deaths related to COVID-19 were also reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths to seven, said Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya.

Among the 85 new cases, 76 were from Nakonde district in the northern part of the country and nine were from Lusaka.

Chilufya said Nakonde, the border town with Tanzania, has now become an epicenter.

The government will intensify screening and testing in the border town and other border areas to ensure that cases do not continue to escalate, he said.

He said the increase in cases was an indication that pandemic was still with us and called on people to continue observing health measures prescribed by the government. Enditem
