KAMPALA, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Ugandans marked Mother's Day with good news of two baby mountain gorillas being born at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the southwestern part of the east African country.
Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) said in a statement the babies were born between April 25 and May 1.
"The sexes of both baby gorillas are not yet known due to the tight security mounted by the parents to guard them against any danger. Gorillas tend to be very aggressive when they get a baby, therefore, it is not possible to get closer to establish the sex of the baby few days after birth," UWA said.
"The birth of new mountain gorillas is testimony to Uganda's successful conservation efforts. With enhanced integrity of protected areas, there has been a general increase in wildlife populations in Uganda," the state-owned conservation agency said.
According to UWA, the recently concluded census for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park indicates that the park had 459 individuals.
"The number of mountain gorillas in the Virunga Massif stand at 604 shared between Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) effectively bringing the total number of mountain gorillas in the wild to 1,063," UWA said.
