ADDIS ABABA, May 11 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases across the African continent surpassed 63,325 as the death toll from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic reached 2,290 as of Monday afternoon, the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.
The Africa CDC in its latest situation update issued on Monday also revealed the number of confirmed COVID-19 positive cases across the continent rose from 60,657 on Sunday to 63,325 as of Monday afternoon, eventually registering about 2,668 new cases during the stated period.
The continental disease control and prevention agency also disclosed that some 21,821 people who have been infected with the COVID-19 have recovered across the continent as Monday afternoon.
The death toll due to the COVID-19 pandemic across the African continent also surged from 2,115 on Sunday afternoon to 2,290 on Monday, according to the Africa CDC.
The continental disease and control prevention agency also noted that the COVID-19 pandemic has spread across 53 African countries.
Figures from the Africa CDC also showed that amid the rapid spread of the virus across the continent, the highly COVID-19 affected African countries include South Africa with 10,015 confirmed cases, Egypt with 9,400 confirmed cases, Morocco with 6,063 confirmed cases as well as Algeria with 5,723 confirmed cases.
The Africa CDC also disclosed that the Northern African region is the most affected area across the continent both in terms of positive COVID-19 cases, as well as the number of deaths. Enditem
