DAR ES SALAAM, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Businesses came to a standstill at the Tanzania-Zambia border on Monday after Zambia closed its border over the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Tanzania-Zambia border at Tunduma in Songwe region and at Nakonde district in Zambia is a gateway to member states of the Southern African Development Community.

Nicodemus Mwangela, Tanzania's Songwe regional commissioner, appealed for calm to scores of businessmen stranded on the Tanzanian side of the border.

Mwangela also appealed to Tanzanians doing businesses on the Zambian side of the border to observe rules put in place by the Zambian authorities after it shut down its border.

He said Tanzania has not closed down its border and urged people to continue engaging in development activities at the border.

Earlier on the day, Zambia closed its border neighboring Tanzania after experiencing a high spike of COVID-19 infections last week. Enditem
