Moussa Timbine elected as Speaker of National Assembly of Mali

BAMAKO, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Moussa Timbine was elected Speaker of the National Assembly of Mali on Monday with 134 votes during its inaugural session following legislative elections.

At the opening of the works, three candidates were officially presented, including Moussa Timbine and Mamadou Diarrassouba, both of the Rally for Mali (RPM), and Moussa Mara of Yelema party.

Moussa Timbine has been the president of youth congress of the RPM since 2004. A teacher by training, he was also 1st vice-president of the outgoing National Assembly.

During this inaugural session, the deputies will also elect the office of the National Assembly, the parliamentary groups and the working committees.

According to the final results announced by the Constitutional Court on April 30, the RPM came first in the legislative elections with 51 deputies. The presidential party comes far ahead of Alliance for Democracy in Mali - Pan-African Party for Liberty, Solidarity and Justice which obtained 23 deputies, and the Union for the Republic and Democracy with 19 seats.
