HONG KONG, May 17 (Xinhua) -- The following are the latest developments of the COVID-19 pandemic in Asia-Pacific countries:

DHAKA -- The number of new COVID-19 infections in Bangladesh rose by 1,273 on Sunday, the highest daily increase since March 8.

Nasima Sultana, a senior Health Ministry official, told an online media briefing that "1,273 new COVID-19 positive cases and 14 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh."

She said the number of confirmed infections totalled 22,268 while fatalities stood at 328.

TOKYO -- The confirmed COVID-19 cases in Japan increased by 22 to reach 16,337, according to the latest figures from the health ministry and local authorities on Sunday.

The number excludes the 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined in Yokohama near Tokyo.

Meanwhile, the death toll in Japan from the pneumonia-causing virus currently stands at 769, according to the health ministry, with the figure including those from the cruise ship.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The number of COVID-19 cases in Malaysia totalled 6,894 after 22 new cases were recorded, the Health Ministry said on Sunday.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said at a press briefing that 59 cases had been released, bringing the total cured and discharged to 5,571 or 80.8 percent of all cases.

JAKARTA -- Indonesia reported 59 new deaths of the COVID-19 on Sunday, raising the total fatalities in the country to 1,148, said Achmad Yurianto, a health ministry official.

Yurianto also said there were 489 new confirmed cases within the past 24 hours, taking the total to 17,520.

MANILA -- The Philippine health department reported on Sunday 208 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 12,513.

In a daily bulletin, the Department of Health (DOH) said 74 more patients have recovered from the disease, bringing the number of recoveries to 2,635. It said that seven more patients have died from the COVID-19, bringing the death toll to 824.

NEW DELHI -- India's federal health ministry Sunday morning reported 120 new deaths from COVID-19, and 4,987 positive cases since Saturday in the country, taking the number of deaths to 2,872 and total cases to 90,927.

This is the highest one-day spike in COVID-19 cases in the country.

"As on 8:00 a.m. (local time) Sunday, 2,872 deaths related to novel Coronavirus have been recorded in the country," read information released by the ministry.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 13 more cases of the COVID-19 compared to 24 hours ago as of 0:00 a.m. Sunday local time, raising the total number of infections to 11,050.

The daily caseload hovered below 20 for two straight days. Of the new cases, seven were imported from overseas, lifting the combined figure to 1,167.

ISLAMABAD -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has risen to 40,151 with 873 deaths in Pakistan, according to the data updated by the country's health ministry Sunday morning.

A total of 1,352 new cases and 39 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, the statistics revealed.

Overall, 27,937 patients are under treatment in different hospitals while 11,341 have recovered completely, which is 28.2 percent of the total confirmed cases.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand reported one new confirmed case of COVID-19 on Sunday, said a statement of the Ministry of Health.

The case is linked to a cluster outbreak in an aged care facility in Christchurch, as a household contact of an earlier case.

This means New Zealand's combined total of confirmed and probable cases reach 1,499, of which 1,149 are confirmed, it said.

CANBERRA -- More than 1 million Australians have been tested for COVID-19, medical authorities said.

As of Sunday afternoon, there had been 7,044 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Australia.

"There have been over 1 million tests for COVID-19 carried out in Australia, to be exact 1,015,652 tests conducted right across the country," Deputy Chief Medical Officer Michael Kidd said on Saturday afternoon.

KATHMANDU -- The Nepali government on Saturday confirmed the first death from the COVID-19.

In a statement, Nepal's Ministry of Health and Population said a 29-year-old woman from Sindhupalchwok, a district in the country's central region, died while being brought to a hospital in the outskirt of the capital city Kathmandu.
