BELGRADE, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Proof of a negative COVID-19 test will no longer be mandatory for travelers who wish to enter Serbia, the government decided at a session on Thursday.
The proposal to reopen border crossings enabling free entry of all people to Serbia without coronavirus testing was proposed by the COVID-19 crisis response team two days ago, and was justified with the low ratio of infection among the tested.
According to a statement by Prime Minister Ana Brnabic on Wednesday, the government's decision was made as Europe is slowly normalizing its air traffic. "Serbia must not lag behind," said the statement.
After the state of emergency was abolished on May 6, Air Serbia restored commercial flights on Thursday, with three to Zurich and two to Frankfurt.
"In addition to Zurich, London, Vienna and Frankfurt, by the end of the month we will also fly to Amsterdam and Paris, then to Ljubljana, Tivat and other cities in the region, and as of June 6 to New York," said Duncan Naysmith, chief executive officer of Air Serbia.
Serbia declared state of emergency due to the COVID-19 epidemic on March 15 and lifted it on May 6.
