WUHAN, May 23 (Xinhua) -- No new confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported in central China's Hubei Province on Friday, the provincial health commission said Saturday.

By Friday, Hubei had seven confirmed COVID-19 cases, including one in severe condition and one in critical condition.

The province reported 25 new asymptomatic cases on Friday, while 14 were released from quarantine. The total number of such cases under medical observation was 295 by Friday.

A total of 284,110 close contacts of COVID-19 patients in the province had been tracked by Friday, 1,037 of whom were still under medical observation.

The provincial capital Wuhan announced a campaign last week to expand nucleic acid testing in order to better know the number of asymptomatic cases or people who show no clear symptoms despite carrying the virus.

According to Wuhan's municipal health commission, the city performed about 4 million nucleic acid tests between May 14 and 21. On Thursday alone, the test number exceeded 1 million.

As of Friday, death toll from the virus in the province stood at 4,512, including 3,869 in Wuhan.

Hubei had so far reported 68,135 confirmed COVID-19 cases in total, including 50,340 in Wuhan. Enditem
