MANILA, May 28 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 shook the Philippines' main island of Luzon on Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology (Phivolcs) said.

The institute said the quake, which struck at 1:17 p.m. local time, hit at a depth of 81 km, about 17 km northwest of San Fernando City in La Union Province.

The institute said the tremor was also felt in Labrador town in Pangasinan Province, in San Jose del Monte in Bulacan Province and in the cities of Quezon and Navotas in the capital Metro Manila.

The institute said the quake, which was tectonic in origin, will trigger aftershocks but will not cause damage.

The Philippines has frequent seismic activity due to its location along the Pacific "Ring of Fire." Enditem
