HAVANA, May 28 (Xinhua) -- The Cuban government on Thursday denounced the U.S. administration's interference in China's internal affairs and expressed its support for China's decision to strengthen national security.

"Cuba condemns interference in China's internal affairs and supports its right to ensure the well-being of all its citizens," Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said on Twitter.

"We welcome China's decision to consolidate development, recover from COVID-19 and strengthen institutions, legality and national security in its entire territory," he tweeted.

On Thursday, deputies to China's 13th National People's Congress (NPC) voted overwhelmingly to approve a decision on the national security legislation for Hong Kong.

The NPC decision was made to safeguard China's national sovereignty, security and development interests, uphold and improve "one country, two systems," safeguard Hong Kong's long-term prosperity and stability, and guarantee the legitimate rights and interests of Hong Kong residents.

Also on Thursday, the Office of the Commissioner of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region said it firmly opposes and refutes an earlier statement by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who alleged that the national security legislation would undermine Hong Kong's autonomy and freedoms.
