Cuban president congratulates Raul Castro on 89th birthday

HAVANA, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Wednesday congratulated Raul Castro, first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC)'s Central Committee, on his 89th birthday and thanked him for his contribution to the Cuban Revolution.

"Congratulations to our Army General, Hero of the Cuban Republic, fundamental actor of the Revolution and contemporary history," Diaz-Canel said on Twitter, while praising Castro's loyalty and contribution to the Cuban Revolution.

Raul Castro, who was born on June 3, 1931, is the younger brother of the late Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro. He had guerrilla war experience and has been a military and political leader over decades after the Cuban Revolution victory in 1959.

Raul Castro became president of Cuba's Council of State and Ministers in 2008, and was re-elected in 2013. He became first secretary of the PCC Central Committee in 2011, succeeding Fidel Castro.

Diaz-Canel became president of Cuba's Council of State and Ministers in 2018, succeeding Raul Castrol, and served as president of the Republic in 2019 under the new Cuban constitution. Enditem
