Live COVID-19 updates: Iran reports 2,269 new COVID-19 cases, 169,425 in total

BEIJING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

TEHRAN -- Iran reported 2,269 new cases over the past 24 hours, taking the total confirmed novel coronavirus cases to 169,425 on Saturday, according to official IRNA news agency.

Kianush Jahanpur, head of Public Relations and Information Center of the Health Ministry, said during his daily update on Saturday that 75 people died overnight, taking the total fatalities over the virus to 8,209.

JAKARTA -- The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 993 within one day to 30,514, with the death toll adding by 31 to 1,801, Achmad Yurianto, a Health Ministry official, said at a press conference here on Saturday.

According to him, 464 more people had been discharged from hospitals, making the total number of recovered patients stand at 9,907.

The pandemic has spread to all the 34 provinces in the archipelagic country. However as of 12:00 p.m. Jakarta time on Saturday, no more positive cases were found in five provinces, namely, Aceh, Bengkulu, Southeast Sulawesi, West Sulawesi and East Nusa Tenggara.

BEIJING -- Graduating students of universities in Beijing are allowed to return to campuses gradually from Saturday, according to local authorities.

More than 20 universities including Peking University, the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) and Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) are expected to welcome back over 4,800 graduating students on Saturday.

This move follows the reopening of primary and middle schools on June 1, as the COVID-19 epidemic continues to wane in the Chinese capital.

BANGKOK -- The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) announced on its website that it has granted seven more domestic airports to resume flight operations, effective from Saturday.

The seven domestic airports include Tak, Trad, Nakhon Ratchasima, Narathiwat, Pai, Phetchabun and Sukhothai.

"The CAAT has greenlighted the seven airports to resume domestic flights for now, as according to the Thai government's relaxation of COVID-19 lockdown measures," said CAAT director-general Chula Sukmanop, "All airports are not allowed commercial inbound flights yet (flights from overseas)."

MOSCOW -- Russia has confirmed 8,855 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, raising its total to 458,689, its coronavirus response center said in a statement Saturday.

The death toll grew by 197 to 5,725, while 221,388 people have recovered, including 8,708 over the last 24 hours, according to the statement.

MANILA -- The number of coronavirus cases in the Philippines rose to 21,340 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 714 more infections on Saturday.

The DOH said in a daily bulletin that the number of recoveries further climbed to 4,441 after 111 more patients have survived the disease. Enditem
