TIRANA, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Health authorities in Albania have reported a total of 122 new coronavirus cases over the last three days, a record increase registered in a short time since March 9, when the first coronavirus cases were confirmed in Albania.

Speaking at a daily briefing on Thursday, Mirela Cami from the Ministry of Health and Social Protection stated that 44 new coronavirus cases were registered in the last 24 hours, raising the total number of confirmed cases in Albania to 1,385.

According to Cami, nine health personnel tested positive for COVID-19 over the last 24 hours and all of them were contacts of previous positive cases.

Twenty-one patients have recovered from COVID-19 disease, bringing the number of cured cases in Albania to 1,001 since the outbreak of the pandemic, Cami added.

On Thursday, health authorities also reported the death of a 59-year-old patient diagnosed with COVID-19, raising the death toll to 35. The patient was hospitalized for six days in intensive care and suffered from other accompanying diseases.

The health authorities also reported record numbers of confirmed coronavirus in the past two days with 36 and 42 cases on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.

The sharp increase in positive cases comes after the government has lifted the majority of lockdown measures across the country. Enditem
