SANAA, June 16 (Xinhua) -- The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen launched on Tuesday morning at least five airstrikes on the capital Sanaa held by the Houthi rebels, the Houthi-run al-Masirah TV reported.

The airstrikes hit Houthi-controlled military sites on the hills of al-Subahah, Attan and Nahdain in and around the center of the Yemeni capital city, local residents said.

The Saudi-owned Al-Hadath TV also reported that the coalition targeted Houthi militia's military sites and weapon depots in Sanaa.

Yemen has been mired in civil war since late 2014, when the Iran-backed Houthi rebels seized control of much of the country's north and forced the Saudi-backed government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi out of the capital Sanaa.

The Saudi-led coalition intervened in the Yemeni conflict in early 2015 to support Hadi's government.

The Yemeni five-year war has killed tens of thousands of people, mostly civilians, displaced 3 million and pushed more than 20 million to the brink of starvation. Enditem
