COLOMBO, June 19 (Xinhua) -- The Sri Lankan government on Friday said cinemas nationwide will reopen on June 27, after being shut since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the island country.

Secretary to the Cultural Affairs Ministry, M.K.B. Harischandra, in a statement said that cinemas will reopen to the public under strict health guidelines which will be released to the public soon.

Sri Lanka is gradually returning to normalcy as capital Colombo resumed economic activities late last month after being shut for over 2 months.

To date, 1,948 patients have been detected nationwide, out of which 1,446 patients have recovered and been released and 11 deaths have been caused by the virus.

Sri Lankan authorities last week said no public transmission of the virus had been reported since April 30 but the public had to maintain strict health guidelines such as social distancing, maintaining hand hygiene and wearing face masks when leaving their homes. Enditem
