QALA-E-NAW, Afghanistan, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Taliban militants killed 10 security personnel in an attack in Afghanistan's western Badghis province on Wednesday, deputy to provincial government Faiz Mohammad Mirza said.

The militants attacked a security checkpoint in Balamurghab district early Wednesday but fled away after facing strong resistance, the official said, adding "unfortunately 10 soldiers and police were killed."

Meanwhile, head of the provincial council Abdul Aziz Big asserted that the troops were besieged by the Taliban over the past two days and finally 10 were killed due to delay in sending reinforcement to defend the positions.

Provincial government spokesman Najmudin Burhani said the Taliban militants also suffered casualties but could not give an exact figure.

The Taliban outfit has yet to make comment on the latest clash. Enditem
