Iraq warns of increase of COVID-19 cases, as daily cases climb to 2,200

BAGHDAD, June 24 (Xinhua) -- The Iraqi health ministry on Wednesday warned of serious health situation, as it recorded 2,200 new COVID-19 cases, the highest daily increase since the outbreak of the disease, bringing the total number of infections nationwide to 36,702.

The ministry also confirmed 79 more deaths, raising the death toll from the infectious virus to 1,330 in the country. A total of 16,814 patients have recovered from the disease so far.

The new cases were recorded after 11,445 testing kits were used across the country during the past 24 hours, and a total of 477,433 tests have been carried out since the outbreak of the disease, according to the statement.

The latest jump of the infections pushed Ryadh Abdul-Amir, head of the Public Health Department, to warn of the serious situation by the sharp increase of the coronavirus infections.

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus, Iraq has been taking measures to contain the pandemic.

China has been helping Iraq fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

From March 7 to April 26, a Chinese team of seven medical experts spent 50 days in Iraq to help contain the disease, during which they helped build a PCR lab and an advanced CT scanner in Baghdad.
