WASHINGTON, June 24 (Xinhua)-- All-Star Charlie Blackmon of the Colorado Rockies has become the first Major League Baseball player known to have tested positive for COVID-19, local media reported on Wednesday.

The American star tested positive after workouts at Rockies' Coors Field in Denver. The Rockies then closed the ballpark following MLB protocol.

Earlier, the Philadelphia Phillies had seven players and five staff members test positive for the virus but the team has not identified any of them.

Several other teams have said they also have players who have tested positive.

Despite the COVID-19 crisis, the MLB is pressing ahead with its season restart, after it was halted by the pandemic in March.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred confirmed on Tuesday that the season will begin on either July 23 or 24, with a 60-game regular season instead of the original 162-game schedule.

Players are set to begin reporting for the resumption of training by July 1. Enditem
