U.S. COVID-19 cases surpass 2.7 mln: Johns Hopkins University

NEW YORK, July 2 (Xinhua) -- The number of COVID-19 cases in the United States topped 2.7 million on Thursday, reaching 2,711,603 as of 1:14 p.m. (1714 GMT), according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

Meanwhile, the national death toll reached 128,385, according to the CSSE.

The state of New York reported most cases and the highest death toll in the country, standing at 394,954 and 32,043, respectively. Other states with over 100,000 cases include California, Texas, New Jersey, Florida, Illinois and Massachusetts, the CSSE data showed.

Over 50,000 new COVID-19 cases were reported on Wednesday, a single-day record. At least five states, including California, Texas and North Carolina, saw the biggest-ever daily increase in cases, according to CNN.

Anthony Fauci, the country's top infectious disease expert, told a Senate panel on Tuesday that new COVID-19 infections could reach 100,000 a day if current outbreaks were not contained. Enditem
