Drought hits over 100,000 people in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Over 100,000 people have been affected by an ongoing drought in parts of Sri Lanka due to the lack of monsoonal rains, Sri Lankan Disaster Management Center said in its latest situation update here Monday.

According to the report, 103,219 persons in 31,580 families had been affected by the drought in Kurunegala and Polonnaruwa in the north-central province, Batticaloa and Trincomalee in the East, Hambantota in the south and Mullaitivu in the north.

The center is presently distributing water as well as transporting water bowsers into the affected areas, according to the report.

The Meteorology Department, in its latest weather update, said spells of showers were expected in the Western, North-western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces of the country in the coming days but in the dry areas, temperatures were expected to hit above 36 degrees. Enditem
