TAIPEI, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Taipei has recorded its hottest day since the city's weather station was founded in 1896, Taiwan's weather department said Friday.

The temperature rose to 39.7 degrees Celsius in the city Friday afternoon, the weather department said.

Due to the effect of a Pacific high-pressure system and prevailing hot, dry southwesterly winds, the whole island experienced hot conditions.

The weather department issued a heat warning to four counties and cities Friday. Hualien, in eastern Taiwan, recorded a temperature of 38.6 degrees Celsius Friday, the second-highest across the island.

This summer the mercury has broken several records in Taiwan, due to stronger Pacific high-pressure systems caused by global warming, the weather department said. Enditem
