BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, July 25 (Xinhua) -- As of July 25, 2020, 43 cases of dengue fever have been reported in Brunei, the country's Ministry of Health said on Saturday.
In a statement regarding the current situation of dengue fever in this country, the health ministry said that there is 1 case of death associated with dengue hemorrhagic fever.
According to the ministry, the number of 43 cases shows a slight decrease compared to 2019, when 69 cases were reported in the same period. However, there are several neighboring countries reported to be experiencing an increase in the number of dengue fever cases at this time.
Dengue fever is a female Aedes mosquito-borne disease caused by a dengue virus infection. Typically, the symptoms of dengue fever last for 2 to 7 days and include sudden and persistent fever, muscle aches and lack of energy. Sometimes infection with the dengue virus has the potential to cause more severe symptoms including bleeding and death.
The ministry said that Aedes mosquitoes can be found in most places in Brunei. Aedes mosquitoes can easily breed in water reservoirs either indoors or outdoors. There is no specific treatment to treat dengue. Treatment is more focused to relieve symptoms of infection as well as close monitoring in the hospital, if needed.
The ministry reminded the public that the dengue fever situation in Brunei is under control. However, to ensure effective and continuous prevention and control of dengue, the public is advised to be vigilant, especially by maintaining a clean environment at all times, take the protective steps and comply with any instructions issued by the ministry.
