KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia reported 39 new COVID-19 infections, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday, bringing the national total to 8,943.
Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that 11 of the cases are imported and 28 are local transmissions, the largest daily increase in the country since mid-June.
Most of the local transmissions were reported in the North Borneo state of Sarawak, where a number of clusters had been identified.
Two new clusters were confirmed, including one involving a foreign returnee who had failed to observe home quarantine requirements, according to the statement.
Malaysia has reimposed mandatory quarantine for foreign returnees at designated facilities on July 24, following local transmission caused by imported cases.
Six more cases were released on Tuesday, bringing the total cured and discharged to 8,607. No new deaths were reported, leaving the total deaths at 124. Enditem
