PARIS, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Huge wildfire since Tuesday afternoon has destroyed 1,025 hectares in France's southeastern commune of Martigues and forced the evacuation of many homes and camping sites, firefighters said on Wednesday.

The fire was under control earlier after 1,800 firemen were brought to tackle the blaze for long hours overnight, according to firefighters,

A combination of strong winds, high temperatures and a lack of rain have fueled the blaze whose cause remains unknown.

Some 2,700 residents and tourists were moved after the forest fire started near the Mediterranean city of Marseille. No victims have been reported in the blaze.

Wildfires are frequent during summer in southern France, the country's second main tourism destination after the capital Paris.

Green activists have warned of high risk of wildfires as summers become hotter and drier due to global warming. Enditem
