TRIPOLI, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Libya's UN-backed Prime Minister Fayez Serraj on Thursday met with Turkish and Maltese foreign ministers in the Libyan capital Tripoli to discuss consultation and coordination among the three countries.

The meeting discussed the latest developments in Libya and the need to resume political process in order to achieve security and stability in Libya, said a statement issued by the prime minister's information office.

The officials also discussed cooperation of the three countries and the European IRINI operation against arms smuggling to Libya.

The IRINI operation was launched in order to enforce the UN arms embargo on Libya, where Serraj's UN-backed government and the rival eastern-based army were engaged in deadly armed conflict over control of Tripoli for more than a year.

"Turkey and Malta expressed their appreciation for the humanitarian role played by Libya, and expressed readiness to provide Libyan coastguard's needs in terms of equipment and maintenance," the statement said.

"The meeting also emphasized the need for the European Union to contribute effectively to combating illegal migration and work to tackle the root causes of the problem by directing investments to source countries," it added.

"At the end of the meeting, it was agreed to form a joint working group to deal with and follow up issues of common interests," the statement revealed. Enditem
