Lao gov't closely monitors people entering Laos to prevent second wave of COVID-19

VIENTIANE, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Lao government continued to closely monitor people entering the country to prevent a second wave of COVID-19 outbreak.

Deputy Director General of the Department of Communicable Diseases Control under Lao Ministry of Health, Phonepaserd Sayamoungkhoun, told a press conference on Thursday that people entering Laos will be sent to quarantine centers for 14 days and they must have the appropriate travel documents and authorization from the National Taskforce Committee for COVID-19 prevention and control.

On Wednesday, 1,125 people entered Laos from Thailand, 16 from China, and 707 from Vietnam. A total of 115 people entered the country via the Wattay International Airport in the capital of Vientiane.

The National Taskforce Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control announced that it has been monitoring 3,768 people at 55 accommodation centers across the country.

The Lao government has warned people countrywide and relevant authorities not to neglect containment and preventive measures.

As of Thursday, Laos has tested 35,428 suspected cases with 22 cases tested positive, and 19 patients have recovered. Another three patients have been treated in the designated hospital, Mittaphab Hospital (Hospital 150) in Lao capital Vientiane.
