JERUSALEM, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- A Palestinian man stabbed to death an Israeli in central Israel on Wednesday afternoon in a suspected terror attack, the police said.

The incident took place in Petah Tikva, a city north of Tel Aviv.

Police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld said the suspect, a 46-year-old man from the West Bank city of Nablus, stabbed a man before fleeing the scene. He was arrested shortly later, armed with a knife, by police officers.

Rosenfeld added that the suspect entered Israel with a work permit.

The victim was taken to a hospital and died of his wounds shortly later, according to a statement issued by the Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva.

He was identified as Shay Ohayon, 39, a father of four.

"Police have confirmed that the main direction of the investigation into the stabbing that took place is that it was a terrorist attack," Rosenfeld said.

The violence came amidst rising tensions in the region following the normalization agreement achieved between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.

Under the U.S.-brokered agreement, Israel will halt its plan to annex portions of the occupied West Bank.

The Palestinians condemned the deal, saying it normalizes ties with Israel without addressing the issue of the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, which Israel seized in a 1967 war. Enditem
