KABUL, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan Ministry of Public Health on Tuesday reported 31 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of infected people to 38,200.

A total of 162 tests were conducted within the past 24 hours, and 31 were positive in eight provinces out of 34 Afghan provinces, the ministry said in a statement.

Four patients died within the period, taking the death toll to 1,406, the statement added.

The total number of people having recovered from the virus reached 29,254 after 142 new recoveries were recorded since early Monday.

Laboratories across Afghanistan have completed 102,823 tests since February.

Local health experts believe that the actual number of infections could be much higher than the official figures as scores of patients did not visit hospitals and there was no system to register them. Enditem
