Top DPRK leader convenes meeting to wage recovery campaign for typhoon damage

PYONGYANG, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Kim Jong Un, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), convened a meeting on Saturday to organize a recovery campaign in the country's typhoon-affected regions, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported Sunday.

The KCNA said more than 1,000 dwelling houses were destroyed along the coastline areas of North and South Hamgyong Provinces and "not a few public buildings and farmlands were inundated" because of Typhoon Maysak.

At the enlarged meeting of the Executive Policy Council of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), Kim said waging a post-disaster recovery campaign is an important political work and crucial to unity when the country undergoes difficulties and hardship.

He stressed the necessity to issue a general mobilization order to the transport field to ensure the sufficient supply of materials for rehabilitation.

During the meeting, Kim Song Il, chairman of the South Hamgyong Provincial Committee of the WPK, was dismissed, according to the KCNA.

After the meeting on Saturday, Kim arrived in the typhoon-hit areas in South Hamgyong Province for inspection and received a detailed report on the typhoon damage.

Typhoon Maysak hit the DPRK's eastern coast on Thursday with strong winds and heavy rain. Typhoon Haishen is expected to arrive at the Korean Peninsula late Monday. Enditem
