UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Security Council on Tuesday adopted a resolution to renew the mandate of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) for a year, till Sept. 15, 2021.

Resolution 2542 won the support of 13 members of the Security Council. China and Russia abstained.

UNSMIL is tasked, among others, to further an inclusive political process and security and economic dialogue in Libya; further the continued implementation of the Libyan Political Agreement; help consolidate the governance, security and economic arrangements of the internationally recognized Government of National Accord; help to achieve a cease-fire and, once it is agreed by the Libyan parties, provide appropriate support to its implementation; support subsequent phases of the Libyan transition process, including the constitutional process and the organization of elections.

The resolution decides that UNSMIL should be led by a special envoy of the UN secretary-general, and that a coordinator shall be in charge of UNSMIL's day-to-day operations and management.

The resolution requests the UN secretary-general to appoint a special envoy without delay. Former Special Envoy Ghassan Salame resigned in early March.

It requests the secretary-general to provide the Security Council, no later than July 31, 2021, with an independent strategic review of UNSMIL.

The mission was first established in September 2011 to support Libya's new transitional authorities in their post-conflict efforts. Enditem
