NUR-SULTAN, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- China has made outstanding progress in alleviating poverty and Kazakhstan is interested in China's experience in fighting poverty, a Kazakh expert has said.

"In 1990, 755.8 million people lived below the poverty line in China, while in 2019 this figure was 5.5 million. From 2013 to 2019, 82.4 million people were lifted out of poverty in the country, making China the largest contributor in world's anti-poverty efforts," said Lydia Parkhomchik, a researcher at the Institute of World Economy and Politics at the Foundation of the First President of Kazakhstan.

The expert said that China has set an ambitious goal of winning the battle against poverty and finishing building a moderately prosperous society in all respects in 2020.

To achieve the end, Chinese authorities have waged a nationwide campaign involving both public and private sectors as well as millions of Chinese people. The Chinese government also spent 126 billion yuan (around 18.6 billion U.S. dollars) in 2019 to subsidize the fight against poverty, the expert noted.

"For Kazakhstan, the Chinese experience in tackling poverty is worth studying in details. It shows that raising living standard will have a multiplier effect on the country's economy," said the expert, adding that investing in human capital is proven to be the optimal strategy to tap a country's economic potential.
