TRIPOLI, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Floods have killed three people in the southwestern Libyan city of Ghat, according to local and medical sources on Tuesday.

"A call for help is made to all Libyan and international organizations to provide urgent help to the people of Ghat, following the floods that swept through the city," Ghat's municipal council said in a statement.

The statement added that the floods killed several people, damaged public and private properties, and disrupted communications and power in the city.

Mohamed Idris, a physician of Ghat general hospital, told Xinhua that the hospital received bodies of three people killed in the floods, adding that the death toll is likely to increase as others are still missing.

Ghat is located some 1,400 km southwest of the capital Tripoli, near the Algerian border.
