LONDON, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- A man who hacked at a British police officer's head with a two-foot machete was jailed for 16 years with an extra three years on licence once released, local media reported Friday.

Muhammad Rodwan hacked at police officer Stuart Outten repeatedly after he was pulled over in east London for driving his van without insurance last August.

Outten, dubbed "Britain's hardest cop", managed to Taser Rodwan and brought him to ground despite his horrific injuries. The 29-year-old Metropolitan police officer then called to a passer-by to use his radio so he could call for an ambulance.

Rodwan, who has previous convictions for rape and another machete attack, claimed he was acting in self-defence. The 56-year-old handyman was jailed for nine years in 1997 for wounding two men in his flat in east London.

Graphic bodycam footage showed Rodwan punching the London police officer before grabbing the machete as he tried to arrest him.

"This was a brutal and a shocking attack with a machete on a police officer carrying out his duties," judge Justice Carr told Rodwan.
