Cancer fight lad, Leighton Brownrigg, two, left allergic to daylight
A BOY battling a rare cancer cannot now go outside — after his collapsed immune system left him allergic to SUNLIGHT.
Leighton Brownrigg, two, suffers so badly he has to wear high-strength suncream indoors.
Exposure causes his body temperature to soar dangerously and the hot summer has cracked and split his skin, leaving him in agony.
Mum Zoe, 22, said: “He is living in darkness. He can only travel early morning or at night in a car with tinted windows and air con.
“I have to keep the curtains at home shut and cover him in factor 50.”
Leighton was diagnosed last February with juvenile myelomonocytic leukaemia, which affects just one in a million children.
But since a bone marrow transplant last August, he has no immune system, which has caused photosensitivity — an abnormal reaction to sunlight.
Leighton, from Stourport-on-Severn, Worcs, has also had 17 chest infections since and now faces UV-light treatment, which can make photosensitivity worse.
Single Zoe said: “On a cloudy day he can look out the window, but he gets upset when he sees other kids. It is heartbreaking, but his bravery amazes me.”
Birmingham consultant Dr Mark Velangi added: “Despite all this, his leukaemia remains in remission.”
