Heathrow bag chaos hits hundreds
Queues ... British Airways customers stranded at Terminal Five
By GARY O’SHEA Published: 26th September 2013 HUNDREDS of British Airways passengers were stranded and dozens of jets delayed at Heathrow yesterday — as a glitch stopped bags being checked in.
The computer chaos at Terminal Five — where almost all BA Heathrow planes leave from — meant travellers with luggage for the cargo hold could not fly.
Many had to wait for hours while staff found them seats on later flights.
The fault, which began at around 9am, took three hours to fix. The airline said: “We are sorry for any inconvenience to customers and we are working hard with the airport owner to minimise any disruption.”
A Heathrow spokeswoman added: “We have additional staff in the terminal to help passengers.”
The mayhem did not affect arriving flights.
But it echoes the terminal’s disastrous opening day in 2008, which saw hundreds of bags go astray and long delays to flights.
However, it has had few problems since and has won widespread praise.
